Floor plans
The Tipi provides a circular space 16'/4.9m in diameter. The walls slope inwards from the ground up, with the poles crossing at a height of about 16'/4.9m.
Into the centre of the groundsheet is cut a "fire pit", and at the rear of this cut out is a large wooden stake driven into the ground to secure the rope which joins the poles together.
All tipis have a smoke hole that can be closed up when it rains. However, it is not possible to totally seal the area where the poles cross at the top. This means that when it rains, some water will drip down into the "fire pit".
The Tipi needs a level, grassy pitch 17' in diameter that is not under trees or overhead power lines. Ideally, an additional 6' is needed at the front of the pitch for the pole holding open the smoke flaps, but this does not have to be used.
We have had classes of 30 infants being taught in the Tipi but, more comfortably, it can seat 6-8 adults and sleep 4.
